As a millennial Filipino, I have witnessed the changes around me, particularly the influences when I was still a student. From books to e-books; from Library to Google; from outdoor plays to online games; from US to South Korea – yes, we know how big the western influence is to us until we thumbed up the Hallyu effect. This unexpected massive Korean wave was brought to us by their two major players - Music and Drama series. But there’s one more responsible why we became the regular Samgyeopsal eater; a K-beauty hoarder; a Melona ice cream craver, and a Korean grocery shopper – clue: we can spend all day watching all the episodes and still wanting to watch for another more!

With Kdrama series, we are offered with a passel of different genre commonly RomCom, Heavy Drama, Action, Thriller, Supernatural and a lot more! Almost all of these Kdramas portray the ordinary stages of life where challenges, growth, love, and surprise in each character connect us to what is true to life. Not just being a series, but it makes us think and feel how these scenes tell us our real situations and give us the inspiration on how to get through it. And this was what I felt when I first watched a Kdrama series. It was a ride of hope, crisis, emotions, and motivation. So much of the feeling that I am sharing a particular outline of my personal pick of Kdrama series that have something to say about our journey as a student because I believe that we only hate our student life once and we wish a thousand times to go back to studying after we had our first bill payment.

So here’s my Top 5 Personal Pick (in no particular order):

*Cheese in the Trap (The Cons of Being Independent)

Photo from Asianwiki
This Webtoon-based romance drama starring Kim Go-Eun (as Hong Seol) and Park Hae-Jin (as Yoo Jung), is the definition of hate-and-love relationship. Whilst their love bloomed eventually after some realization and cryptic events (go watch it so you’ll know), this drama gave accent to the life of Hong Seol being an independent and hard-working student. She lives afar off her parents and she has part-time jobs to support her studies and pay her bills. We can see here how independence sometimes put pressure on us because people tend to think that we can always get through everything on our own, that we don’t need anyone to share our burden with, and that they can always count on us whenever they want to. Most of the time people think that we are always okay on our own, and we can always deal with our troubles, and it's okay if they can't take part in our comfort. The good thing is, she has reliable friends she counts on during dark times. Fortunately, she even has her own prince who is always there for her except that he is seemed so secretive about some things. Also, another good thing about this drama is that you can get some inspiration about how her room was organized and idealized to leave an impression on you that “this is the kind of room I want to spend studying in even from hours to day despite the challenges around me” - a small, a little bit messy but still cozy room is right there.

*Love Story in Harvard (Choosing Priorities And Setting Aside What’s Needed Later)

Photo from Asianwiki
Released in 2004, Love Story in Harvard is one of the most classic but still timely Romance drama even after many decades! A love triangle joined by Kim Hyun-Woo (Kim Rae-Won), Jung Min-Hong (Lee Jung-Jin) and Lee Soo-in (Kim Tae-Hee), who in the future will be Lawyers and a Doctor. Hyun-Woo and Min-Hong rivalry abounded outside the four corners of their classroom (and their law books) as they both fell in love with Soo-In who was a medical student. Living the tougher life, Soo-in couldn’t afford to be completely committed with anyone yet despite the evident efforts of the two men running the race to her heart. She was set to succeed on her goals and she didn’t see a love relationship as a need to get through it. Being a Harvard medical student, Soo-In finds her way difficult to pay for her studies and living expenses all at the same time, so she toils on multiple jobs to survive, leaving herself with so little time for anything or anyone else. Unlike the two men, they both have the luxury and the time to enjoy their lives despite the pressure of their studies. Soo-In's situation gives her limited time and opportunity, so she pushes herself to work harder and double her effort to get her way out. This is the reason why she decided to leave Hyun-Woo hanging in pain and heartbreak. Yep, she fell in love with Hyun-Woo but she couldn’t afford to let go of her dreams after so many hard works. As you can see, not everyone is capable to love and to work out his goals at the same time – sometimes there must be only one choice, and it’s something that is more needful at the present.

*The Heirs (Dealing With Bullies While Surviving The Peer Pressure)

Photo from Asianwiki

An 18-year old student, Cha Eun-Sang (Park Shin-Hye) struggles with life as she affords to see her household help mother toiling so hard just to provide for their needs despite her disability (mute). Turn of events made it even much harder for her when she discovered the fabricated truth her sister has been keeping since she went to US. She thought it was a dream come true when she finally stepped her foot in the western land but some things flipped it to something nightmare. When she went back to Korea, she was shocked to find out their rented house empty. Now her only choice to survive is to live at her mom’s employer house too. Much of their surprise, Eun-Sang was offered with a scholarship by (Lee Min-Ho) Kim Tan’s father at their exclusive school. After accepting the scholarship, Eun-Sang was even put to a more difficult situation where she had to deal with a different class of wealthy people. She was labeled as “new money” by Kim Tan to leave the impression that she is also on the same level as them. However, this only invited a chance to speculate her real identity and (Kim Woo-Bin) Choi Young-Do was all ready to unmask her. Being the new talk of their school, Eun-Sang realized how cruel some wealthy people could be. She saw how bullies at their school ruined someone else’s life with no guilt, and how could she be in the same situation any sooner. But Eun-Sang is no weak, she didn’t want to complicate her life so she didn’t attune to the norm of these wealthy people. She was not ashamed of her life’s truth, only that it was kept in secret because Kim Tan thought it was the best game plan for her survival.

*Goblin (What It’s Like to Have An Uncertain Future?)
Photo from Asianwiki

More than the love story, one of the remarkable scenes in Goblin is (Kim Go-Eun) Ji Eun-Tak’s roller-coaster future and uncertainty. Living with her Aunt and her family, Eun-Tak never felt cared for and loved by her relatives. Her temporary survival at her aunt’s house was her mom’s insurance that was still unbeknownst to them its whereabouts. As lonely as she gets each day, Eun-Tak resolutely seeks answers to her questions about her future: college, job, and a boyfriend (yay hahaha). She knows that she is the Goblin’s bride but she didn’t expect their meet-up on her birthday. Fast forward, after all the fate that is bestowed on Eun-Tak and the Goblin, these two must prepare for a different path to future – the Goblin has to die and Eun-tak has to live her dreams and goals until it’s all fulfilled. It is a sure sad thing that the Goblin has to die, but it is also surprising how Eun-Tak will be able to pursue her studies (she wanted to be a producer). As the Goblin prepared himself for his death, he was also preparing Eun-Tak’s future, specifically her studies. When Eun-tak found out that she could finally pursue college, she did all her best to prepare for it – she reviewed all her subjects seriously, she looked for her possible school, and she took up college entrance exams. Despite being almost an orphan, Eun-Tak still has the Goblin, the Grim Reaper and Deok-hwa (Goblin’s Nephew) to cheer her up and to celebrate her special moments with them. Taking Eun-Tak’s life to reality, it is really difficult to dream for college when you have nothing but your dream. We believe that one of our first possible stepping stones to achieve our dreams is to finish our studies. But for some with no money and moral support from their family, it is an impossible thing yet to even start with. But let’s take it a lesson as well from Eun-Tak’s perseverance and persistence to realize her dreams - we may all have different versions of uncertain future but we can always be certain with what do we want to become and to have sooner and that’s something worth looking forward to.

*Go Back Couple (Rediscovery of Relationship and Future)

Photo from Asianwiki
A good start in marriage doesn’t always mean a good end for the couple. This is also where love alone (apart of any of its component) is not enough to work out a relationship becomes relevant. Choi Ban-Do (Son Ho-Jun) and Ma Jin-Joo (Jang Na-Ra) who started as college sweethearts before they got married ended up in the court for a divorce. And then one night, they suddenly went back to the time as college students, where they first met and fell in love with each other. Having been able to time-travel back unexpectedly, Jin-Joo and Ban-Do thought that this is finally the chance to change their fate as a correction to their present state. They were both involved here with their past almost lovers and they even tried to work out a relationship with these people to see if it’s supposed to happen. Only then they realized that Jung Nam-Gil (Chang Ki-Young) and Min Seo-Yeong (Go Bo-Gyeol) were just part of their relationship’s realization and the things they were not able to see as a couple were unmasked. Their college journey and the people they are with during this time are all links to help them redefine their current relationship status and rediscover their true future - knowing each other, understanding each other, and staying in love with each other despite the odds along their way. Their efforts to pursue the opposite state of their relationship didn't stop the events and the people in their relationship to point them back to each other. This might be a story of going back in time, but we all know that college is really a chunk of our life where we create the best possibilities - career, love life, connections, and achievements. It is also the fastest replay of our life to look back at our regrets, despair, celebrations, happiness, lessons and even failures. One thing I really learned in this drama is that it is only possible for us to look back in our past so let's not skip everything to a conclusion yet even we are at our emotion's peak but let's give our best to analyze our situations to serve ourselves the best solutions.

All of these are all my personal takeaways of the mentioned dramas, so this might be different from yours but I hope you are open to mine! :) For more K-drama suggestions and reviews, please keep tuned to my blog!

Thanks for reading heaps! ♥♥♥

How are you?
It's been so long since you missed the things you used to do - the things you used to dream.
How's the life you deal with?
Sure you're really longing for the good recollection of your childhood - let's skip the thought that you missed to play because you still do it until today.
What about your dreams? Have these turned to a quite reality already?
You just turned 25 three days ago. You're quite aging, aren't you?
I know you're always surprised at everything - most of these are the ones you didn't think would actually come as a surprise. Ugh. That's really life.
I know you've felt caged over the years after entering the life beyond your control. I've felt the roughness of your own  road. It's not easy to keep yourself going - you see you're not even halfway yet, but there's no need to rush.
I've seen you cheering other's journey - that they have run few laps already while you're still blank at how long you have trod.
I hope you learn to focus on your journey. The road must not be smooth but sure it has something greater and better for you every after lap.
Before I totally forget, please don't stop on dreaming for yourself. I know, unconsciously, that you just stopped dreaming a lot because you thought your dreams wouldn't be other's happiness and success. You always mind other people before yourself. That is so good of you but please don't give up on your dreams. Dreams do come true in no particular time - please take advantage of it. You are not a limited being. You have a lot of potential in yourself. Don't allow it to rot and feel regretful once it's all used up for nothing.

Your life must be really hard but you've stood so strong. I'm so proud of you :)
You've been faithful to your commitment and endeavors. I hope this always cheers you up :)
Aira, you've run a good mile, and please keep running no matter what. Your finish line is always waiting for your coming. I know you're gonna make it :)

May God be with you always. ♥

Love story doesn’t seem to be an outre talk of our lives now. Every day we read and hear stories of love about couples who just got engaged inside a flying airplane; a flash-mob from a die-hard suitor; and a sudden break-up of a decade old relationship. On Facebook alone, we get to see lovers going out for a date, flaunting their flowers and chocolates, updating their relationship status, and a lot more of these usual relationship feats. Of course, do not forget Facebook’s hallmark for your emotions “Feeling in love with blah blah blah”.

Do these all still sound interesting? I believe, it still does. Love stories may be normal and alike – still, it is distinctive. My belief: There might be a lot of Rose-and-Jack or Romeo-and-Juliet love stories around, but there could be only one Aira-and-Jeremy love story (or insert yours) – there’s no copy-cat for what and how your relationship is becoming (unless you’ve got a bunch of stalkers/bashers/haters who like to do so). There might be instances that show similar experience of how a relationship started and ended but nothing yet has gone the same run in between (at least based on my existence) – it seems but not exactly.

With no one’s approval or permission, I am so free to share our love story here on my blog – whether someone or no one will read it. HAHAHA! If you seem to like discovering something new out from the trendy ones, I got you here! But seriously, this is no fairytale at all, not even extraordinary. SO DON’T EXPECT A LOT. My promise: 1.) it will worth your time reading it 2.) Your eyes will be in good use and 3.)  YOU’VE GOT WARNED about what this is going to be - yep,  this is quite long, BE PATIENT.

SO LET'S GET THE STORY ROLLING...

We first met in a summer Youth Camp in Laguna back in April 2013. As we were gathered, the venue was big enough to house 300 participants and some areas for recreation - Basketball court, volleyball area, team building facilities, and then a Ping-Pong table with players caught my attention.  I approached a certain young man and asked him if I could play also after them. I was smiling at him like I didn’t know why I even did. And yes, that man was JJ (no more cryptic disclosure).  The camp ended well and normal – we didn't exchange our names and phone numbers; neither there was Hi or Hello. Our only encounter with each other was when he received a question and an unintended smile from me for the sake of a Ping-Pong game. HAHAHA! A week after, another camp was held in which we both attended to the second time around. We had been joining the same camp twice, but we still didn’t get a hold of each other – you know, we didn’t feel the need yet to do so because nakaschedule yan, wait lang. While the camp was running, there was segment for young men in which they had to convince the audience why they deserved to be the Crowned Prince (just remember Mr. Pogi of Eat Bulaga). You know what ? JJ did something ridiculous that caused everyone to laugh hard. What he did? He was confidently introducing himself saying some things about him whatnot, and when he was about to take a seat, he didn’t notice that the center chair was a make-believe, only resembled to a real one and just being covered in white blanket - this deceived him like there was really something to sit on (at least the space saved him a second shorter Hahaha). Actually, most of the guys fell on that bluff, but he's the only person I know by far who was proud of his own blunder - the rest were consciously ashamed. I was laughing the most at him at the longest minute.

Could this be something? When someone can make you smile and laugh at the same time beyond frequent reasons? He is sure funny, but I don't know -  I don't know what these all could mean yet. Our first two encounters were quite a sort of comedy - full of laughter and fun. On the other hand, it seemed ordinary but grand – first, I smiled at him; second, I laughed at him, and the third? It was the beginning...

After those camps, one night I received a call from him. At first, I didn’t know it was him until I asked. He told me that someone wanted to talk to me (LOL, he thought he could confuse me - IT WAS JUST REALLY HIM). He was telling me that his friend wanted to know my name, where do I live, etc. – but take note, we had been on the call for more than ten minutes, and I had been waiting who’s that friend he was talking about. Okay, for the sake of what he confessed, I was able to talk with his “friend” and little did I know, there was a bunch of his friends with him already when he called me – and I talked to each of them. Wew! We talked like we already knew each other deeply. I laughed so hard (again) and I almost cried because of the fun! This was how everything started and I couldn’t believe we have been together this long.

We started texting and calling each other like every couple out there did. Everything was going well with us until there came a month that we just stopped (Initially, I stopped and then he cooperated HAHAHA). He was really fun to talk with; we would spend three hours of talking but, I just stopped texting and calling him for no clear reason. I even had no idea about his whereabouts and his daily life since that day. We were both in college already, and I found my junior year quite challenging; I was surviving still and all, so probably school was not the justification – it really should be I... and JJ (Of course he was still an accomplice! Hahaha).

Come at the end of this month-long-no-text-or-call pause, I decided to reach out to him again. Let me call this a CPR to an almost dying relationship. Unexpectedly, he responded - quickly and eagerly. We revived our communication like nothing happened – it felt like there was no gap at all. We then decided to pray for each other: If we are really meant to be together, along with our promises and commitments. Constant prayer and putting God as the center of our relationship have been our underpinning core; apart from these, we wouldn't have gone this far and I wouldn't be in a proper position to boast of our relationship (very very light lang naman). It wasn't easy - waiting is a great key but it sure gave us uncertainties along the way. JJ had to wait almost two years before he could have my YES. I needed to finish my studies first – yep, my coming-of-age principle which resulted from a of realization. That’s not enthralling to read but, every time I tell this to anyone, the impact is there! I exactly gave him my YES when I got the confirmation of my graduation application. We met at Mcdonalds and I shared to him the news. He was excited and he felt like he was going to finally have it. I told him that he must wait again until 12 midnight - of course he had to, I gave him no choice but to wait again. So make sure your man is willing to wait  for you not only once or even twice - make it a surprise! Hahaha!

SO HOW ARE WE LATELY?

Now? We are on our third year of our official relationship and have been together for five years! Those years of course were a passel of small fight, misunderstanding, verging break-up, disappointment and a lot of common relationship experiences! Along the way, we both met each other's families, and friends, and enemies (joke lang). We are now working professionals in our own field. Oh, did I tell you yet that we graduated with the same course? Ask him why he had to take the same course as I did. Kidding aside, I just shared this because I think this is the only thing we have in common Hahaha! All the rest is a complete flip side of who we are what we are from one another (for eg. I like Korean dramas, but he likes it more. Notice to all: He can watch two to three kdramas a month HAHAHA). At least now, I believe that two opposite people can possibly be together - you just need to get a hang of each other, no matter what. If you think solving math problems is much difficult, oh well, can you tell how can a couple decide where to eat when one wants a pasta and the other wants an unli-rice meal? At least Math has formula and solutions, while our relationship has empty tummies only - we like to eat, but we don't eat the same food most of the time Hahaha! Please let me know when Mang Inasal (Philippines' largest chicken inasal food chain famous for its unli-rice meals)  has pasta on their menu, by then we will never argue on this. Hahaha!

Just so you know, I never thought I was able to lay our story here with lots of shortcuts! This was quite long already, but there had been a lot of things happened in those five years in which I didn't write anymore, next time meron pa. Abangan!

All these and more are nothing but a story of love sustained in prayer, embraced in faith, and committed in God's will.

PS: JEREMY JOHN, NOT READING THE FACEBOOK POST IN WHICH I MENTIONED YOU IS AND WILL BE OKAY; BUT NOT READING THIS POST WHICH I DEDICATED FOR YOU IS NOT AND WILL NEVER BE OKAY. LABYU! HAHAHA
